Rehabilitation & Living Center

The Victorian Villa Rehabilitation and Living Center has done its best to create a Web site that anticipates and meets the needs of our residents and their families. With that goal in mind, we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions.

1. Are you a nursing home or residential care facility?
We are both. We have a 47-bed nursing facility licensed by the state of Maine to provide intermediate care and skilled nursing care. We also have 66 residential care beds and a 12-client adult day services program.

2. What is the difference between a nursing home and a residential care facility?
Residential care (sometimes referred to as boarding care) means receiving some assistance with the activities of daily living such as bathing, grooming, medication management, housekeeping, meal preparation, and transportation services. Nursing care, on the other hand, provides 24-hour nursing care and supervision. Our nursing facility offers nursing care, rehabilitation services, medical services, as well as assistance with activities of daily living. The state of Maine determines the level of care needed for each resident eligible for MaineCare.

3. What is Adult Day Services?
The state of Maine recognizes that many people can continue living in the community if certain needs are met. The Adult Day Services (ADS) program helps a dozen people in this way. We serve clients who are self-pay as well as those who qualify through MaineCare, Elders Independence of Maine, and the Veterans Administration. Call Ronnalean Sanborn, ADS-Social Service Director, if you are interested in learning more.

4. Does Victorian Villa have Nurses on staff?
Yes. In the nursing facility we have a director of nursing who manages the nursing department and oversees the care of each resident. Nurses are staffed around the clock. In the residential care unit we have a residential care director who manages the personal care staff and oversees the care of each resident.  Nurses are on-call around the clock. The director of nursing and residential care director are usually available during normal business hours.

5. Do you help me take my medication?
Absolutely! The nurses and medication technicians in the nursing facility and the certified residential medication aides in the residential care facility take great pride in promptly and accurately delivering medications to you.

6. Do you provide transportation to and from appointments?
Yes, family members are encouraged to remain involved by participating, but we provide transportation when needed. In the event of an emergency we call EMS or another ambulance service to transport the resident to an appropriate medical facility.

7. Will I get to go on field trips or outings?
We have several outings each month for small or medium-sized groups of residents. Typically, we go to WalMart, a restaurant, and a state park (seasonally) at least once each month. We also bring the community to you through programs, volunteers, and other visitors. Those interested in volunteering may contact Anna Touchette.

8. I’ve seen your vans in the community, what are they used for?
We have a large van with a wheelchair lift and two mini vans that are used daily for transporting residents to medical appointments and for activity and adult day service outings.

9. May I drop in for a tour?
You are welcome to visit at any time; however, to provide answers to the many questions you are likely to have, we recommend that you contact either Tanya Smith, for the Nursing Facility or Ronnalean Sanborn for the Residential Care Facility for a guided tour.

10. When can I have visitors at Victorian Villa?
We have no set visiting hours. Family members and friends are welcome at any time of the day or night. We strongly encourage families to be involved in your life. It gives you increased feelings of self worth and continuity.

11. Can I go out to eat with my family?
You may go out any time your family or a friend wants to take you out unless this is medically unsafe. We ask that you sign out and back in and let one of the staff know you are leaving so that we know where you are and can review your medication needs.

12. Can I keep my primary care physician?
Victorian Villa wants you to get the best care you can. Several doctors from the area come to the facility regularly to see residents in the nursing facility. We have found that this generally results in the best care for the resident even if it means changing physicians. For residential care residents and nursing facility residents needing specialists, we provide non-ambulance transportation to physicians in the area (including Rumford, Farmington, Livermore Falls, Lewiston/Auburn, and South Paris).

13. Can I keep some of my personal items in my room?
Personal items are encouraged as space permits. We are unable to provide storage for personal furniture and extra clothing. We encourage you to keep valuables in a safety deposit box or with family members.

14. What are some of the conveniences that are not included in Room and Board?
Televisions – you can bring a small or medium-sized television for your room or use one of our color televisions for no extra charge.
Cable – you can have the expanded 50 channel cable for $20/month (prorated if necessary).
High speed internet is available for a fee. Visit the office for details.

15. What is the resident trust fund?
Residents may keep funds in a bank account set up specifically for the residents at Victorian Villa. This interest-bearing account allows us to safeguard your cash, pay for beautician services, cable, or other expenses with your authorization. You are not required to open an account.

16. Will I be able to use the telephone?
Victorian Villa provides a local access cordless telephone at each nurse’s station for residents to use. Cell phones are a good option now that a tower has been built in Canton. Residents who wish to have a landline telephone in their room should contact Oxford Telecom directly to set up services.

19. Can I eat my meals in my room?
Meals are an enjoyable social time for many, but we understand that sometimes you may prefer to eat alone. Meals will be served to you in your room upon request.

20. What if I don’t like the meal I’m served?
At each meal, we offer the main choice and an alternate choice. If you do not like those, we have a ‘soup and sandwich of the day’ available for lunch and supper. Menus are on a four week rotation. Meals are varied and posted ahead of time so you know what will be served.

21. Can I invite a guest to eat with me?
Yes. The kitchen staff needs to be informed promptly so that you can be served at the same time. Just let the nurse or a kitchen staff member know of your plan. Meals are available for a small fee of $3.00. Payment can be made in the business office or the office mailbox when the office is closed.

22. Are snacks available?
At 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. snacks are delivered to the residents. Snacks are offered to meet any dietary restriction. Snacks are also available at 7:00 p.m. for those who desire or need one due to special conditions. Snacks are also available upon request.

23. What is the food like?
Most of the food is made just like Grandma used to make. We don’t use mixes. The meals are ‘tried and true’ favorites. Your suggestions are always welcome; in fact, the residents chose the menu for at least one meal at their monthly resident council meeting.
